What To Expect

At TreeTop, we understand that visiting a Child Advocacy Center can be daunting. We’re here to make the process as clear and supportive as possible, so here’s what to expect, from referral through ongoing care.

Preparing for the Appointment

How do families get connected with TreeTop?

Referrals typically come from law enforcement or the Department of Human Services when there are concerns about a child’s safety. A Family Advocate will then reach out to explain the process, answer your questions, and address any concerns.

What should I bring to my child's appointment?

A comfort item for your child (like a favorite toy or blanket), any relevant medical or legal documents, and snacks or drinks if you’d like, though we have plenty on hand, too.

How should I prepare my child?

Let your child know they’ll be talking with someone whose job is to help kids. Avoid discussing the details of what happened or practicing what they should say as this helps your child share things in their own words and protects the integrity of their account. Most importantly, reassure your child that they aren’t in any trouble and that TreeTop is a safe place to talk.

Arrival

What happens when we arrive?

Our staff will greet you and guide you through check-in. Your child can relax in our play area with books, toys, and games while you meet briefly with a Family Advocate, who will walk you through and answer any questions about the day’s process.

The Forensic Interview

What happens during the forensic interview?

A trained Forensic Interviewer will talk with your child one-on-one in a safe, neutral setting, using non-leading questions. The interview is audio- and video-recorded. Our goal is for your child to only have to share their experience once as part of the investigative process, so the recording can be shared with the professionals who need it without asking your child to repeat themselves. Members of the multidisciplinary team, such as law enforcement and child protective services, may observe from another room.

Will I be in the room with my child during the interview?

No, caregivers aren’t in the interview room, as this protects the integrity of your child’s account. But you won’t be far away or left in the dark: while your child is being interviewed, your Family Advocate will sit with you, answer your questions, and help with any paperwork.

After the Interview

What happens right after the interview?

The multidisciplinary team meets privately to discuss what was shared and determine the best next steps for your child’s safety and well-being. Your Family Advocate will then walk you through those next steps and connect you with resources and referrals tailored to your family’s needs.

What can I expect from my child's behavior afterward?

It’s common for children to seem more emotional or slip back into old behaviors after talking through something hard. This is a normal part of healing, not a step backward. Your Family Advocate can help you understand these changes and connect you with additional support if needed.

How do I connect my child or myself with mental health services?

TreeTop can connect you and your child with trusted community and treatment partners, so the right support is available close to home.

Ongoing Support

How does TreeTop support us after the initial visit?

Your Family Advocate stays by your side for as long as you need, helping with case updates, court proceedings, and follow-up referrals to community resources.

Most importantly, let your child know that they are not in any trouble. Assure your child that TreeTop is a safe place to talk and that everyone there is here to help. Do not repeatedly question your child about the abuse, and do not have your child practice what to say.
