What To Expect

At TreeTop, we understand that visiting a Child Advocacy Center can be daunting. Our goal is to provide a safe, supportive environment where children and their families feel informed and cared for every step of the way.

Preparing for the Appointment

Referral Process: Referrals to TreeTop are typically made by law enforcement or the Department of Human Services when there are concerns about a child’s safety.

Initial Contact: A Family Advocate will reach out to you to explain the process, answer questions, and address any concerns.

What to Bring:

    • A comfort item for your child (e.g., a favorite toy or blanket)
    • Any relevant medical or legal documents
    • Snacks or drinks, if desired (we have plenty of snacks and drinks to choose from, though!)

Child Preparation: It’s helpful to let your child know they will be speaking with someone whose job is to help kids. Avoid discussing details of the situation to prevent influencing their account.

Arrival

Warm Welcome: Upon arrival, our staff will greet you and guide you through the check-in process.

Child-Friendly Environment: Children can relax in our play area, equipped with books, toys, and games, designed to ease anxiety.

Family Advocate Meeting: You’ll meet with a Family Advocate who will explain the day’s process and answer any questions.

The Forensic Interview

Private Conversation: A trained Forensic Interviewer will speak with your child in a safe, neutral setting. This conversation is designed to be non-leading and supportive.

Observation: While the interview occurs, members of the multidisciplinary team (law enforcement, child protective services, etc.) may observe from another room to avoid repeated questioning.

Caregiver Role: Caregivers are not present during the interview to maintain the integrity of the child’s account and to prevent any unintentional influence.

Post-Interview

Team Discussion: The multidisciplinary team will discuss the information gathered to determine the best course of action for your child’s safety and well-being.

Caregiver Meeting: You’ll meet with the team to discuss the interview’s outcome, next steps, and any recommendations.

Resource Connection: Our Family Advocate will provide you with resources, referrals, and support services tailored to your family’s needs.

Ongoing Support

Team Discussion: The multidisciplinary team will discuss the information gathered to determine the best course of action for your child’s safety and well-being.

Family Advocacy: Our advocates continue to support you beyond the initial visit, assisting with court proceedings, therapy referrals, and connecting you to community resources.

Behavioral Health: TreeTop offers trauma-informed therapy services to help children and families heal. Our therapists specialize in evidence-based treatments tailored to each child’s needs.

Most importantly, let your child know that they are not in any trouble. Assure your child that TreeTop is a safe place to talk and that everyone there is here to help. Do not repeatedly question your child about the abuse, and do not have your child practice what to say.
